HD Diagnostic software?

Hello all! Just wanted to see what you other IT Pro's are using in terms of diagnosing hard drives? Not so much only when they have failed, but there current state as well. Do you have any reccomendations? Perhaps both freeware and shareware? Also same question for data recovery what to you all use along those lines? thanks!
