YOU MIGHT WANT TO PAY ATTENTION HERE:
He is pirating software if he uses his own cd's to install windows w/ a key that wasnt sold w/ said disc. If the customer doesnt have a cd then they are out of luck. I go through this all the time and I tell people the same thing, they need to purchase a legal copy of Windows. If they bought a PC without a disc or at least a recovery disc then they got ripped ofF and they learn a lesson for next time.

BTW - stick that last comment up your a**, Dont come here w/ 2 posts to your name and start giving orders. RESPECT

You're buying the lisence, not the CD. If the customer has the lisence---that's what costs money. That's why you can buy one CD with 30 lisences or 6 lisences or whatever they come in now.

That's not pirating---it'd be pirating if he used the same lisence in more than one computer, or produced a fake lisence.

And thats why he wants the key algorithm so he can make fake keys via keygen or something alone the lines but hey I may be wrong if you have ligit purposes ask Microsoft and explain why you need it you never know.

he said he'd be happy just to have a program that can verify what versio windows the key is for.

People can have legit reasons for needing the algorithim. Not everything is about copping Microsoft out of cash or being illegal...

I think its a little presumptuous to accuse this guy of piracy. Besides, its unlikely that you need the full algorithm to determine what version it is for.

For all any of you know, it may be as simple as shifting or flipping some bits and adding up a sum. I mean, VERIFICATION (determining a valid key) is an entirely different than an algorithm for GENERATION.

I believe you guys are misunderstanding. Sometimes I am given a key code over the phone when I need to reload a client's computer. Unfortunately, most of the times, they don't have any idea as to what version of XP the code coincides with. Instead of going through and testing the code by trying to install one version, then another, then another, trying the code with each install, I would like to write a program that will run the key code I am given through the algorithms and tell me if its an invalid key, or that it belongs to Windows XP Home Retail, or Windows XP Professional Upgrade... so on and so forth.

I know where are coming from. When I first start fixing computers out of my home, I had the exact same problem. I didn't have the right xp discs for their (customers) versions. Eventually I ended up with 7 different version of xp (because I have bought 12-14 copies of xp for my many computers that I had over the years).

I know you don't work to install a bootleg copy of windows over their legitimate copy. when you go to most small computer shop around here, that exactly what they do. they will install a bootleg copy of xp pro (no activation) over somebody legit machine that they bought in for repairs and need a format. I don't work like that. I send them home with the legit key that they came with.

anyway, here is (was) my workaround. first thing most people's keys will work for the OEM copies of xp (home for home, pro for pro it won't mix them ).

this what you do. takes your favorite xp disc and use it to install xp on their machines. when their cd key don't match during install, put your key from your computer in, instead. that one will work. don't waste precious time taking that cd's out and inserting a different xp disc while you have to reinstall windows all over again, while trying to find which disc work and repeating this over and over. I know this is why you ask this question. you are trying to save time

Now finish your install. now when it come time to activate, activate it.. it won't activate. now when you see the change product key option, change the key back to their key on their computer(I don't remember if the change product key came before or after activation part. it been awhile since I did this).

it will go through. it doesn't check for what xp disc that you have. it check for hardware matching.

Tyler, the problem is that he is (supposedly) a pc shop working for some companies and is rebuilding machines. The customers call in with their license keys, but the key isn't telling him which version of Windows it is for, so he doesn't know what to install.

Of course, as I've said before, this is total bunk. He should be asking the customer for that information, examining the PC, or requiring some kind of proof of license.

This is especially needed because if MS (or any disgruntled customer) reports his shop and he hasn't got a process for verifying the legal license of his customers, he can get screwed royal.

well one thing is for sure, coolted will never post another question on this forum again.

His story sounds legit to me, and the explanation that Inaris gave him is right on the money.

it seems some people can't understand jack s***.

coolted, if you need any help in the future, PM me or some other people that will actually give you answers and not bust your balls.

Its so amazing that no matter what you say good or bad someone will flame you for it.

But for the most part what you guys also have to take into consideration that most customers are not home or are very hard to get a hold of, and most customers just write down thier keys and bring them in to you, and all of the other little factors that can play into the situation. What we are trying to accomplish is saving time because more time = more tech work, which more tech work = more money, and you can see where I am going with this.

What started as a simple question, for a simple program turns into a heated debate. I honestly appreciate everyones positive feedback on this situation.
