well if you take off sp2 and when you do the updates its going just reinstall sp2 so just keep sp2 on.

SP2 is junk, it ran like sh** for me.
My Reasons=
1. Keeps on telling me that I do not have a Firewall (I do)
2. Keeps on telling me Virus Protection was not detected (I have A/V)
3. I disabled the Microsoft Security Center.
4. When I had 512mb of ram, i used to have approx 350mb of free phyiscal memory. But when I went to SP2, I only had 250mb. 100mb were eaten up by SP2.

I keep a dual boot system with SP1 on 1 side, just in case I need to do something like burn an xp disc or download more than 10 thing a once. SP 2 won't let you do that (there a hack for the latter problem though to let sp2 have you download up to 50 things)
