Hello all, (my first build)
is this is the right area to post?
hopefully there is some out there who has had the same problems I'm
having right now. Except for the monitor, floppy, and case I've upgraded
all the hardware in my system (4 yr. old Cybermax).
The old WD 13 gig HDD died so I had to replace it and decided to just
upgrade everything. Installed the new HDD and set it up with the 98SE CD.
Got the thing running but it was only recognizing less than 2 GBs of a
160 GB HDD. Reinstalled the OS without formatting and it recognized the
correct size. However, when I went to check out a utility (defrag) I got a
"the computer does not have enough free memory" error. The system box shows
the 512 MB that is installed. Decided to try and install XP and it stopped,
saying it was stopped to prevent any damage. XP noted four components that
may have a problem : RocketRaid, Asus MB, Radeon card, US Robotics modem.
All of these products claim to be XP compatible.
Should I just start again from scratch, back everything up, and do a fresh
install of XP? I would like to partitiion this HDD to run Linux, and XP. Also
add another drive, hence the raid. One more note: I bought the Maxtor HDD before
the WD died so I didn't bother backing up a lot of files. Anyone have recs. on a
decent recovery utility?
Sorry my post is long, but I'm just getting really frustrated with windows.
anything would be appreciated. I can post a system summary from Sandra if that
would help out.
