vertial or horizontal refresh rate messed up??

My son was playing a simple game on the computer and all of a sudden the computer screen goes haywire and says something about the vertial horizontal refresh is messed up or something like that. I have gone into safe mode but when i go to properties and settings and under advanced and monitor. It doesn't let me adjust the refresh rate? All it says is let hardware control it and I have no other option? Any help would be appreciated.

Check the settings on the monitor itself. You know how it has those adjust buttons? Mess with those.

Did you get a magnet or something close to it?

Thank you for the response. I tried to change the frequency on the monitor under user and it says to scroll the wheel on the monitor but it won't let me once i get to the different frequency options.

so you cant change the refresh rate anywhere at all?
