My father-in-law is e-mailing me some type of video that is an .avi. I have no idea what format that is or what type of program you can view it with. I'm running windows XP service pack 2. And i have windows media player 10. Do i need to download something else?

AVI means Audio Video Interleave and it is the oldest form of video with sound. There are so many versons Media player decided not to support it by defualt.

Go here http://www.divx.com/ this will give you a DivX codec to play divX files but it also comes with a great many other codecs including AVI and that is what I use. I strongly recommend divX.

i assume WMP supports avi's in their orginal coding, but the file sizes are hugh. people encode their files to make them smaller. WMP does provide on th fly installation of some codecs. However, for any that it dosent such as Divx 5 or xvid you'll need download and install the codecs yourself. http://www.free-codecs.com/

I'm downloading the DivXplay free bundle from the DivX website. i did some searching and found that it will be using almost 20mb even when i'm not using it. Sounds like it'll take up a lot of space. some people stated to download just codecs. Do i just download them and they install themselves to the correct place? I've never heard of them before.

Just download DivX and the setup is easy. If you install the player or not it will give you a clear choice while you install it. And 20meg is not that large at all...
