I am thinking about replacing my intel celeron with a p4. Both are socket 478, however there is something bugging me that not all socket 478 chipsets are the same. Could someone just tell me whether all socket 478s are compatible with eachother. Thanks.

Good question. Im not sure but i will tell you dropping the celeron is a very wise thing to do. Celeron has no math coprocessor. Other than that im not too educated with celeron.

There are many different breeds of Socket 478 processors:

- Celeron
- Pentium 4 with 400 MHz FSB (Willamette), usually identified w/ 256K L2 cache
- Pentium 4 with 400 MHz FSB (Northwood), usually identified w/ 512K L2 cache
- Pentium 4 with 533 MHz FSB (B-stepping)
- Pentium 4 with 533 MHz FSB + Hyperthreading (3.06 GHz model)
- Pentium 4 with 800 MHz FSB + Hyperthreading
- Pentium 4 Extreme Edition (Prestonia core)

You'll have to check your motherboard's model first before attempting to install a new P4.

Not all motherboards support 533 MHz and 800 MHz FSB P4s, as well as the ones with Hyperthreading enabled.

Quick Examples: (chipsets)

Intel i845 - All 400 MHz FSB models

Intel i845D - All 400 MHz FSB models

Intel i845E - All 400 MHz + 533 MHz FSB models (excludes 3.06 HT GHz model)

Intel i845PE - All 400 MHz + 533 MHz FSB models (includes 3.06 GHz HT model)

Intel i845G - All 400 MHz + 533 MHz FSB models (excludes 3.06 GHz HT model)

Intel i845GL - All 400 MHz FSB models

Intel i850E - All 400 MHz + 533 MHz FSB models (includes 3.06 GHz HT model)

Intel i865P - All 400 MHz + 533 MHz FSB models (excludes 800 MHz FSB models)

Intel i865PE - All 400 MHz + 533 MHz + 800 MHz FSB models + Extreme Edition models w/ latest BIOS

Intel i865G - All 400 MHz + 533 MHz FSB models (excludes 800 MHz FSB models)?

Intel i865GE - All 400 MHz + 533 MHz + 800 MHz FSB models (possibly Extreme Edition models as well)

Intel i875P - All 400 MHz + 533 MHz + 800 MHz FSB models + Extreme Edition models w/ latest BIOS

SiS 645 - All 400 MHz FSB models

SiS 645DX - All 400 MHz + 533 MHz FSB models (excludes 3.06 GHz HT model?)

SiS 648 - All 400 MHz + 533 MHz FSB models (includes 3.06 GHz HT model)

Celeron has no math coprocessor.

Uhh........ all desktop processors since the i486DX have a built in math coprocessor.
