Yes you can do a backup, put everything on a disc or usb drive before you reformat.

A disc you have to be joking a external hardrive my personal data is 16.4 gigs alone that would take alot of DVDs. Heck thats more than one of those HD-DVDs that aren't even released yet.

You can put it on a disc, a hard drive is classed as a disc. Besides 16.4 gigs isn't really a lot, it'll fit on any old HD.

yes definitely cleanly install it, ur gonna want to switch to ntfs with xp and i wouldnt really trust ms to convert the whole drive from fat32 to ntfs as ive heard some bad things happening like it freezing in the middle losing all data and then having to reformat cleanly in the end anyways plus i would want absolutely no remnants of ME still there
