Yeah, what would hopefully happen is the CPU heats up faster than the GPU and the thermal protection kicks in because the GPU won't have a thermal shutdown and will just fry if it gets hot enough, but you have to remember that even if the pump dies the water around the cores will still have to be heated up so your still relatively safe
