My bad, 18 months

That still means 64 GHZ CPU while your stuck with a 4000+ (or maybee even an FX-57) which wont last that long

You won't see a 64GHz clock anytime soon, silicon has reached an architectural limit and both AMD and Intel are moving to multicore processors. Instead of one uber fast processor, you'll see one chip with numerous slower cores built into it to process multiple threads. It produces the same result pretty much

yeah well he has the money and wants to get a very fast computer

also how the hell do you get cpu power to double every 18 months

pentium 2 233mhz 1997
500 1998
1ghz in 1999
2 ghz in 2000
4 ghz in 2001
8 ghz in 2002
16ghz in 2003
and change as you said 18 months
but as far as i know we dont have any 16ghz cpu's so imho thats a bad method but hell itll still be fast for a good many years

Well if you want to get technical, and simulaneously be a jerk about it, they are not going to be using silicone much longer. They are developing new technologies to put in place of silicone, since it has reached it's limit.

And I never said anythign about doubling clock speeds, and neither did the theory. That does not have anything to do with clock speeds, it has to do with raw power from computers.

Gaara, it's a theory, a theory is about thinking one way and one way only about that theory. The theory states doubling every 18 months, nothing about tripling or aquadrupling, but DOUBLING! If something in a theory is changed, and that thing in the theory no longer works, the theory has IN FACT been disproven and a new one will eventually come around to replace it.

Here is my suggestion.

A little overbudget but includes shipping, but no tax. You should figure out what to cut/etc if you want it right on budget.

That is ridiculously overkill for an old guy. For moi, it would'nt be powerful enough :p

Seriously guys, come one. This is how this thread works: Either Aspire is full of crap, and just wants to see what we would throw together for $3000 (for one reason or another) or he convinced this dude that he needs a $3000 machine, or he is convinced that it will last him for 8 years and he needs to be educated on the subject of computers and introduced to the aforementioned Moores Law.

actually i am dead serious

he asked me to put him a 3000 pc for him
he has a lot of money
he is retired
he wants to have a VERY fast computer
and he wants it to last him a while

he told me that upstairs he has an old pc from 12 years ago with a 9gig hard drive
he said he paid 12000 for it when he bought it

Dont take offense, I was just putting it out there, as it's a plausible scenario.

He had, in 1993, a 9GB HDD? 9GB was alot 5 years ago! Shit, in 1993, my mother just got her 386 and it had 15MB, i think, and 1MB of RAM, maybe 2, or maybe half a meg. Either may, it was low.

yeah well did your mom spend 12000 bucks on her comp
yeah i didnt think so
and im sorry but i took offense to that but

"Either Aspire is full of crap, and just wants to see what we would throw together for $3000 "

which makes me sound like an idiot

Well, sorry, but people have been known to do stuff like that. Just like people have been known to lie about their setup, saying they gopt these crazy high scores and whatnot. I'm just someone who dosent trust anybody. And I simply gave that as an option, i didnt say that you definetely were, it was one out of three options. The other two were in favor to you, so you should have noticed that and not taken offense.
