External Hard Drive Problems with Win98se

Plse help...I have a maxtor 3000ls that is full of alot of pictures and music. When I hook it up to my family computer that is running win 98se, it does not give me access to it. It just shows up and says that it is unavailable (retry or cancel). I have downloaded the drivers from the maxtor web page and installed them. Plse help

If it connects via USB do this. Install the correct drivers, without the drive plugged in. Restart the computer. When it boots up, wait for everything to load up. Then plug it in, and it should be detected. That's only if it is USB though.
