any new 5400rpm drive is proabably quieter then a new 7200 or 10000rpm dirve.

then just download and use this...
Acoustic Management (Reduce Drive Noise)
http://www.hitachigst.com/downloads/ftool_ver194.exe

Note - i never used that program so i dont know how or what exactly it is or functions, but i saved the link incase i ever needed it.

and everyone else does have a point. or a question?

why do you need it so quiet when its already one of the quietest things inside the computer? Old old HDDs of course are noisy, but any new one you proabably cant hear unless its right at start up or shutdown.

Seagate makes really quiet hdd. But you won't hear them anyway, unless you have no fans in the case.

I would stick with 7200rpm hdd. The 10k ones apparently make a really annoying whine.

Why do you need such a quiet HDD? The HDD by far is the quietiest of all components. If you want totally quiet, you need to invest in a passive cooling system and one hell of a sound proof case. I think zalman makes a perfect example. Will cost you $1,300 but... it's silent.
