cd rom not working

Please could someone help me, my CD rom is open all the time, whenever I close is it opens again. It does not pick up disks and generally is making me the most irritable person in the world....

Any advice?

Sometimes this occurrs when the IDE cable is plugged in upside down. Did you play with the cable at all?

The drive used to work perfectly until a couple of days ago. it does burn cd's but it will not read once they are burnt or any other drisks for that matter. thanks for the help though

Ok its a burner...
Is there more than one CDROM/CDRW on your comp?
What sort of software are you uing to burn?
Are you using any UDF utilities?

Try removing your CDROM in device manager from within safemode and let windows redetect it

Tried all that, uninstalled, reinstalled. nothing. there is only the one burner.

If I put a disk in the drive starts to read but explorer or any program that requires a cd asks me to insert a disk so it does not read them.

i have also run virus software and nothing is found.

that is a hardware issue if it wont close, check to see if something is stuck inside the drive

even if theres nothing stuck in the drive, it could definitely be a hardware problem
