so i have some cash left over($300) and ive always wanted an old school pc for some reason so ive decided to build one. im gonna use this for the internet, downloading, and minor gaming. i was wondering what would be a reliable and fast cpu for under $40. i was thinking of maybe a PIII or a Xeon. any suggestions? i dont know what else to spend my money on, i just love computers.

Even though you are on a tight budget, I'd still say get a slower Pentium over a faster Celeron. They perform much better.

amd durons are pretty cheap 60$ and you can get a awesome red motherboard dor 30$ brand new and a heat sink for 10-20$ you wont need much more then 256mb of ram if its just a day to day computer wich is about 20$ but if you want to do some minor gameing then id say go with 512 for about 40$.

i was thinking about the duron 1.8ghz, but noticed the l1 and l2 cache was really low(64). is that going to affect anything? i would think atleast 256kb is a reasonable size.

Check the big stores. Some of them have awesome deals. I know that you can get a socket A sempron machine for 300 dollars at compusa.(AR)

Sry its over by 23 dollars/and also after MIR. Hope you don't have to pay tax! And Shipping!

This deal ends today because the HD after rebates ends today. Also, if you feel lucky, you can always go for a cheapo power supply/case. Could save you 30-40 dollars, which you could use to cover some stuff.
