Harddisk....

I just read a book for LINUX...but there said that to partition the harddisk, we must consider about our harddisk...and something they talk about IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) and SCSI (Small Computer System Interface)....

is IDE diff from SCSI physically?
actually, what distinguishes these two??

any such things in laptop's harddisk?

IDE is the most common and cheapest, which you will almost defiantly have. SCSI is mainly used in servers, but the people who want the ultimate gaming machines won't sa no to a 15k rpm hdd. SCSI is expensive. SATA is quite new, and is quite common now, as it has a nice big advantage when you put them into a RAID array.

The actual harddrive doesn't really (apart from faster speeds) but the interface changes.

When it says partition the HDD they mean, don't instal it on the same area as windows is on, so when you partition it, you are splitting it vitually so you can, for example have a drive C and a Drive E. It doesn't damage the harddrive.

thnx for reply... but do you know what's going on with laptop's harddisk? i'm currently trying to partition my harddisk into a few drive, for linux..... using Partition Magic 8.0, and i'm really new about it....still scared of losing data and anykind of that stuffs... so, is there something to do with the type of harddisk in my laptop?

OK you should back up all your important data, as you can lose data sometimes, although it doesn't usually happen. You wil get more help in the Linux forum also.
