I doubt the CPU's toast. I don't think you'd get as far as you do in the boot process if it was. If you shut the puter COMPLEETELY off for like an hour or so (giving the chip a chance to cool to room temp), can you get further along in the boot process? I think it'd be relatively easy to rule out heat.

it really sounds like something came unseated -- check your cards and s(d)imms - make sure that they are firmly inserted into the slots... .

why do you doubt it is static electricity?
since it only happened after cleaning I think it is a very good possibility

Touch the case itself PRIOR to touching anything internal,, and if you want to go further,, put and Anti static mat on the floor,, and a ground wrist band on,,
