if you plan on gaming at the same time as you're editing/recording audio then get the pentium d. otherwise the 640 wold suit you fine. i've heard that the dual-core pentiums are actually slower in games then the single-cores.
 
Yes what jnev said is true. It is because most games do not support SMP(symetrical multi processing) Or in other words, multiple cpus/cores.

but on the other hand, any high end professional program like autocad, video editing, and sound editing suites will take advantage of the dual cores and it will crush the single core cpu's in performance.
