Hi,

Recently, my W98SE machine started to systematically open a windows explorer on C: right after boot.
The first time, I thougt this explorer was running the last time I shutdown the system, so I close it, rebooted, and the explorer came back.
I checked with msconfig, nothing.
I did not see anything in the registry.

Any idea why this explorer keeps starting after each boot ?

Thanks

i think a program is calling up a file which windows cannot find so it pops up explorer instead. click start> run and type msconfig. in the list of programs that start at startup select "hide operating system processes" if there is an option for that and uncheck programs that are being loaded at startup.

reboot to test which program is causing it. if you boot to safe mode you sould not have this happening.

are you refering to Explorer.exe !?!?!?

if so it is the Windows GUI interface and it is required to operate windows.

if you hit Crtl + alt + delete and try to close it does a shutdown windows box appear?

the file browsing Explorer similar to My Computer
try disabling everything on startup, because as ekÆsine said there might be a program Windows cannot find so it will go to Windows Explorer.
also it might be an incorrect registry key in the startup folder
