simple- hdd backup

im about to reformat the hdd in my friends pc. os is 98se, just wanna check, i don't actually have to use a cloning program like symantec ghost to backup the hdd, restore and still have it boot. i haven't really done much with backups because generally by the time i bother reformatting theres no point in backing up

If you format the HD, then you wont have any OS to boot off of.

If you are going to back up files, then burn them onto a CD or something, and then format.

a screw it its late, im tired and i am a forum s l u t. don't worry about the question it really is kinda pointless i'm better of just doing a clean install and restoring the files he wants
