939 or 754?

Im planning on getting new cpu soon and im having trouble deciding on which one

AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Newcastle(754)---$228
or
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice(939)---$190

would there b a notice in speed difference?

3200 venice all the way. 754s are old, use 120nm, dont support SSE instructions, dont support dual channel RAM, and in general are being phased out. the venice is a superb core, and the 3200 will smoke pretty much any game out there

939 because it's newer, faster, and more robust. 754 is old technology, like the 478 for Intel. You won't need to upgrade for a while if you choose Socket 939.

Kind of funny how people say 939 is faster etc, when they don't provide benchmarks to prove it. And by the way, newcastle cores support see and sse2, just not sse3. There is like a 3-4% difference in processor performance of the same speeds because of that, but not extremetly noticible. The only things venices do however have a better integrated memory controller, and is more stable when overclocking. Finally, dual channel does not provide as extreme of a benefit in AMD k8 systems as it does with p4s because of the integrated memory controller. Finally, if you do a search of xbit labs on palmero, you will see what i mean. When comparing the old paris core based on 130mm newcastle core with the 90mm winchester core of the same clock speeds, you will see that there is very little difference. Also, when you compare the old 90 mm sempron core with the new one based on the E stepping,(which is venice core), you will see that there is almost no performance increase.

Dual Channel still provides a great difference, and 754 dont support it.

That old 754 core does not overclock well, uses more power and is limited to half the memory bandwidth. 939 is the way to go

It depends on what motherboard you have. You can't just pick 939 or 754. You have to get whatever your motherboard has. If your computer is older, it probably has 754, but I don't know for sure. You will have to look at it yourself.

Scroll down. It doesn't have socket 754, but 939 pins is faster. You know this because the newer ones are 90 nanometers, and socket 754 is 120, and you'll see on the benchmarks that the smaller, the better.
