Basically if you test the memory for about an hour or at least 3 cycles and if there are no errors then the memory is fine.
Sorry DJ-Chris, I did not read part 2 of your question. I did not write memtest, but it is recommended and I normally don't disable it and I still get errors on a bad module so I won't disprove or prove this is true. All I can say is, the test works whether the L2 cache is on or off.
I am not too sure why it only showed 38MBs done unless it was cycling through the test again.
