MOtherboard is fried

P3 600mhz 128 DRAM 32 TNT2 VID 20GB drive

Intel (Tabor3) BX Motherboard R3

motherboard IDE controller is busted. should i get an exact replacement or should i get a newer model...i can't even find the exact one.

OR should i just replace the whole tower and salvage what i can from it?

you do not have to get an exact replacement. any motherboard that supports up to P3 600mhz would work. it is really up to you if you want to build a new computer. i do not think you can salvage anything from your old computer and i recommend that you do not salvage anything to be safe.

If you have the extra funds, it is probably better to just build a new system, but you could easily salvage your floppy, cd-rom and hard drives. Otherwise you could just get a replacement motherboard that uses the same type of ram and supports a p3. If you would like an exact replacement, check ebay!

Yeah I agree with dave that if you do have some extra funds you should invest in a whole new system. Even for a modest sum of money you can get pretty good deals these days. Just do some price hunting first before commiting.
