does he have the card plugged in to the PSU? I know that sounds obvious but i forgot to do that and my comp would shut down after playing games for like 2 min.
im not sure about the 6600 GT but the 6800 GT requires a power cable with nothing else plugged into in running to the psu. you may want to check into that
