Stupid question on typing

I've been wondering this for maybe years

How come when you're typing then go back to edit something in the middle of the sentence and type a character or something that ends up replacing the word after it.

Do you get what I mean? Like when you go back to edit you end up deleting over your previous stuff?

How do you control or stop this?

This happens when you have "Insert" on, this is just a key above your directional buttons, and it plainly says, "Insert". Push it again, and it should turn off. If you're using M$ suite, and you have it on, on the bottom taskbar, "OVR" should be in black, and when you turn it off, it should go back to gray.
