1394 Firewire problem

I installed a 1394 Firewire card today into one of my older computers, and it came up saying that it found the hardware and then installed it and then came up and said there was a problem installing and the hardware may not work properly well it doesnt it shows up in the device manager but says cannot start code 10 error. I'm thinking from talking to other people that I need to update my bios, but this compaq system is really hard to get into the bios, I can get into what they say is the bios and setup utility but there isnt anything to click on to update the bios or see what the temp is or anything, grant it I am stupid to this stuff so all the help I can get would be greatly appreciated.
