Ok thanks I will try and resest the CMOS, I did the memtest earlier because I thought the new memory I installed was bad (the test showed no problems) I requested Emachines send me a recovery CD so maybe I should wait for that before making any descions about returning it. About the reformat utility, yes I tried it several times. One option was complete restore and save old data into a folder, the other was complete restore with no save. I tried both and get the same error.

Maybe I shouldn't ask this but I don't want to dump another $100 or whatever for windows. Do you think a burned copy of XP would work or does microsft have some anti burning technology now?

Thanks again

Just an update, I tried to install windows xp over again and it wouldn't work. I'm getting tired of this, I think I will just have to take it back

You still have seven days, we are not yet through with attempts.

This new ram you bought... are you using it with the previous RAM? If so pull out one of them. Otherwise, trying installing with the old Ram.

Also, in you bios, select the option 'Load Optimized Defaults' and save&exit.

Good Luck.
