Exactly you cant do everything from a web setup.

You can even see serial ports on the 250$ routers these days
 
Super Micro dropped the parallel port

DFI dropped parallel and i believe the serial ports

if your router has a management port you should also be able to telnet to it via tcp/ip on port 23. if you ever have to flash the bios (because it freaks out or something) you're however screwed. I'm sure they'll come out with some sort of usb to management port cable.

I'm sure they'll be coming out with usb models of the radio scanners and the gps's aswell.
 
I believe you are right about DFI, most people who buy them don't need them at all so its something that's not needed and was removed
