My laptop as a super remote

Is there an external device and some software I can get that would allow my laptop to become the control centre for pretty much any wireless, infra-red, or R-F device? Yes... I'm that lazy!

I had software that let me use my laptop as a TV remote, but I had an IR port on the back of it.
