i am about to start building a new computer, my first one that i have built, and i was wanting some suggestions on brands/specs etc. i am definetly going with an AMD processor, atleast 1GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive. What does everyone recommend for motherboards, video, sound, etc.

Most people around here will recommend the DFI motherboards. From the reviews I have read on them (I havent used one) they seem really good. If you are going for a gaming computer get the DFI SLI motherboard. http://www.dfi.com.tw/Product/xx_pr....jsp?PRODUCT_ID=3449&CATEGORY_TYPE=LP&SITE=US
The new AMD 64 3200+ with the Venice core seems to be the processor of choice, too. It has incredible overclocking potential
Even if you dont overclock the 3200, you would still get good performance out of it.
With RAM, if you arent going to overclock, then get value ram from Kingston or Corsair. If you are going to overclock, then wait for Nubius or someone to see this post and see what RAM they recommends.
For video, one Nvidia 6800GT or two 6600GTs (depending on budget) would be good.
Hard drive: Seagate SATA is probably your best bet.

Yes DFI and ASUS are the big MoBo competitors out there. If your getting an AMD and a ton of RAM, get and SLI nForce4 MoBo. I would recommend 2x 6800gt's and OC em or get 2x 6600gt's and OC them. Either way.
BTW, why do you need so much space? Get a Western Digital Raptor 74 GB 10k RPM, get 2 of em and set em in RAID 8)

i don't do much gaming, and am kinda on a budget. not sure of how much yet, probably 600-800. i dont really care about the video that much. i have an ati all-in wonder 9000 on my desktop, and an ati 9000 mobile on my laptop. they both work fine for me. i want that much space because i have alot of mp3's and movies. i have a 80GB right now, and have to burn all my old movies to dvd's just to download more and i want them all in easy access instead of having to put a dvd in every time. My most important piece of hardware that I have to have is tons of RAM. I don't know why, I just always want more and more and more. I don't really care about processor speed, which is dumb. one of my old machines is a p3 450 mhz with i think its 786 RAM, might be a gig now, not sure.
Anyway, so what is everyones favorite online source to buy new parts? i usually use newegg.com. i haven't had any troubles with them.

Everyone here recommends newegg, it seems. I personally cant order from them (due to living in Canada).
Anyways, I think that a situation like yours calls for an Intel machine. An Intel will be able to handle multitasking and video rendering a bit better than an AMD.

Counter-Strike, DFI and ASUS are not BIG competitors at ALL. DFI by far makes better boards then ASUS no hands down. Along with Abit and MSI. ASUS is not even a consideration for competitors.
Well if your going to do mostly Audio and Video type of applications. I suggest an Intel. Intel is so much better Audio wise then AMD. If your not a gamer either, then a Intel is the better choice.

well at least i admitted it
i only suggested AMD because it runs cooler (so fan runs slower and makes it quieter...uh...this is logical..right?) and because it costs way less than intel
