Maybe the card is just plain old busted. I had a card that did that. I dropped the card like 3 feet and it only froze and gave me artifacts when I really put it to use with games.

what brand is it? i have an MSI Ti4200 and thats got issues, i have to underclock the memory heaps otherwise i get artifacts all over the screen and the computer restarts, but underclocked it works fine. and my temps are: Load 38/39C Idle 32/34C so heat isnt the issue for me. its just the memory which is screwed.
