cd/dvd rom

Hi, this is probably simple, but I am confused. I have a cd/dvd rom that reads all cd's and dvd's but when I tried to burn I had problems. When I check the properties of the rom without a disk it is showing that there is no free space. How is this possible without a disk in there?? I am lost and need a little guidance, please.

Is the drive a CD-RW or is it just a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM.
If it's just a ROM it won't burn.
Blank CD's and DVD's will not show any free space. I don't know why. Once you burn them it will show that it is all full and how much you burned on to it.
