98 is a lot better than ME, but XP is WAY better than 98
2000 is almost as good as XP - but it doesn't let you run some programs, no compatibility mode
XP is best for drivers, it comes with drivers for pretty much all hardware known, there are a few exceptions but 99.9% of the time it will have drivers

I heard that XP had over 1,100 drivers on the actual Install CD.

I have XP Home, it was on my computer when the motherboard gave up. I can't get an answer back from Microsoft to find out if they will let me install it on another computer.

i think i heard somewhere that XP does actually make its own drivers if it can't find the right ones - could be wrong though

to install it with another mobo or another computer (one or the other) you'll either have to tell MS to erase your CD key from their DB or give you a new one.

What XP does is takes Inventory on yer PC, Mobo,HD, Video,Ram etc... I heard 10 different items and stores it on your HD and their Data Base for Comparision purposes. You shouldn't have any problems with MS once you do make contact with your new Mobo. Good Luck & keep Us Posted.
