accessing files on my external hard disk

while accessing files on my external hard disk using USB, the windows exploerer often freezes, and then i have to go through task manager to kill the process.

is this some sort of indication that the external hard disk is about to fail?

It might not be your external device. There is a posibality that you have a virus. You can get a good Anti-virus for free called AVG. you can get it from : http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

i have AVG 7.0 installed.

does AVG prevent the downloading of virii's, or does it simply clean the computer up when prompted to do so.

it is good at automatically updating so i was under the impression, that i dont need to worry about virri anymore

AVG will not stop them getting in. it will only remove after they are in.
