IC in power supply

i took apart an old Tiger POS a while ago, and i opened up the power supply box and looked at all the transformers and inductors and capacitors and stuff in there. one thing that struck me as odd was that it had a rather thick printed circuit board with, if my memory is correct, a small circuit chip soldered onto it. does anyone have any idea what this could be used for at such a place? all the traces on the PCB were a lot wider than you'd normally find, and none of them ran parallel to each other like any data bus would, so my guess is that it all had to do with refining the voltage output to the computer and stuff, but i can't see why it would need a chip there.

I dunno, the Goverment is out to get you buddy LOL,, jk,, it could be a saftey chip. to keep the voltage from overloading when an idiot (not you) dosnt know how to overclock or take care of their PC. that could be it .
