convert .avi to .mpg

I have some video files that I want to convert from avi to mpg or mpeg or whatever it is.

The only problem is, all the converting programmes that I have tried seem to DIE when they try to convert my files. The either complete the process in 5 seconds which you know it did not do, or it dies altogether.

Does anyone know any good converting programmes that should be able to handle large video files?
