hey i was wondering what a good minimum and maximum size for the page file would be. i have 256 mb of ram, the rest of the specs are below.

Dunno if this helps, I got 640MB RAM, min set to 960MB and max at 1920MB.

MIN = RAM X 1.5
MAX = MIN X 2

I guess this was set automatically by windows because i don't remember changing this on my own.

every program deals with the pagefile as well as the operating system, to see how much, you can go into task manager and then go to View and click Select Columns
Check the box that says Virtual Memory Size and click ok. and from then on it will specify how much of the pagefile each program/service is using

I have 256 MB RAM and Windows automatically set my min page file to 384 and max to 768.

If you really want to mess with it, leave the minimum value and change the maximum. The maximum can be any size you want but make sure you have enough free disk space available. Windows will always start out with the minimum page file size and increase as needed until it hits your maximum size.

A third party defrag program can defrag the page file at startup.
