I doubt the spindle is rubbing on the cover,If that was the case it should have already burnt out,It's probably the little writing arm or what ever you call it giving out.

well, if it is the spindle, you can try something anyway cuz its dieing...

get a piece of plexiglass, remove the cover of the hdd and put the hdd in a plastic ziploc bag.

cut a hole into the metal top (there WAS a screw for that center spindle, but not no mooooooooore) and fit a piece of plexiglass into the cutout. Then take some fishtank sealant (NOT SILICONE BASED) and draw a small bead around the plexiglass.

then get some compressed air, blow the hdd out and the cover off, (give the hdd 4 passes) and reattach everything.

if it was the spindle, youll be fine, if it aint, you got a cool display piece lmao Win:Win situation...

Doing that mod is harder than it seems

I also painted the hard drive and didnt let the paint dry enough. Ended up getting a drop on the platter

Lube up your hard drive. Get some WD-40 spray it on the motor and the components. Make sure you don't get it on the platter. It worked for me.
