Ok. This is a setup that was lying on my computer that I "built" a few weeks back. Prices are probably even cheaper now. All in Candian $$. Exchange rate probably 1 US = 1.22 Cdn

Mobo: K8N NEO4 Platinum Athlon64 Nvidia = $179
CPU: AMD 64 3000+ = $185 (OC this)
RAM: OCZ 2x512 PC3200 Kit 2.5-3-3-7 = $185
go with higher latency and save 40 bucks
Vid card: Leadtek 6600GT = $249
Power supply: NoiseTaker EG495P-VE 485W = $99
Case: $90~$100 (Thermaltake Soprano = $100)
Case fans: 2 fans = $25
HDD2: Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA150 160G w/NCQ = $119, Optical: LG 4163B 16X/8X DVD+RW Dual Layer DVD/RW = $78
Keyboard: $20
Mouse: Logitech MX310 - $29
Modem: Modem [US Robotics 56K v.90 PCI internal Fax/Data Winmodem] $19
Floppy: Panasonic 3½ in (1.44Mb) Floppy Disk Drive, Black $10

Total = $1297 Cdn
If go with lower latency RAM, smaller power supply, no 56k modem, no extra fans - Total = $1192

Cool? Pretty future proof too if u wanna upgrade processor and vid card later on.

office is not part of windows xp home or pro edition, u must buy it separately.

if the case u buy has sufficient fans, then u dont need to get any others, unless ur heatsink doesnt come with a fan.

hey i know ive been asking a lot of questions.. i normally never do that to anybody. but since my exp with comps is not a lot (not even close) i gotta ask, right? hahahah ;) anyway, i gotta ask if everything in the setup including the ones u told me to take a look at is fine. and i also gotta say thnx for vrybody's help. ive learned so much in two days than in my comp class in 6 months! weird huh? and who says 'never talk to strangers.' anyway, i gotta hit the sack and go to bed :D

peace

lol, np man, seems like its all there. u should be set to go, and about that post above, its not as good as wat u got.

uhh, wait till unreal engine 3 comes out, then tell us if its future proof :D hehe

the setup we have for him is better than that one i beleive, but feel free to comment on it, its on page 1 or 2.

Openoffice at openoffice.org is a free alternative to office, opens office crap and does more than office.

I would wait for a few days for ncix's sale (ncix.com) and for 50$ they build you your PC

For 1500$ you should be able to buy

DFI Lanparty Nforce4 Ultra D
PCI-E x16 Mobo

eVGA \ XFX 6600GT
kickass video card, much better than 9800 pro.

2x 512 Meg Corsair Value Select \ Samsung PC3200
Good PC3200 ram for the money

Thermaltake TD-420AD
Rock solid PS for the price

Any seagate or western digital hard drive with 8 meg cache
depends on how much space you want

It will man it will :). Well he can easily swap for a better processor later on, if overclocking 3000+ is not enough.

And the only system I see on page 1 or 2 has a Nforce2 and a 9800 pro. Hardly, a "better" system. Look at my price point. It's at $1200. You can swap the stuff DJ-Chris suggested in teh post above for pretty much teh same price. Thermaltake power supply for Enermax Noisetaker and DFI lanparty for MSI K8N. Price will remain the same.

Now for the price point of $1200. You can get a much faster processor for another $120 bucks. X800 XL for another $200.

So 3500+ with 6600GT for $1320 (1200 + 120).
And 3200+ with X800 XL for $1450 (1200 + 50 + 200).

Better than the Nforce2/9800 pro system!..

yea man UE3 will be interesting, i wonder how my rig will run it.. maybe on low settings, lol
