Windows xp incredibly slow... need help

I'm not sure what you did to the machine to cause the slowness, but I can tell you that with only 256mb of RAM, yer NOT going to get better performance with XP.

XP is a RAM hog, due to it's new features and powerful interface integration technologies. 128mb of RAM is recommended, but XP will suck up 256mb easily just idle.
 
yeah definetely a wierd problem, I hope it never happens again, or that anybody else has the same problem... I was about to format my hd and install windows again.
 
Usually the battery....

on the motherboard is to maintain your CMOS settings in the BIOS. I deal with a lot of server equipment which utilizes Battery-Backed Write Cache controllers. If those batteries go out or are being reconditioned, performance of the controller and disk slows substantially. Are you using a RAID controller in your computer that could possibly have a Battery backed write cache?

I've just never known a different type of battery (especially the CMOS battery) to cause that slowness.
