I usually type papers at all hours of the day and the white paper background of MS Word causes the worst eyestrain. Basically, it is like looking at a lightbulb. Is there any way I can change the background color to black or something where it isn't as bright?

I beleive you can. In the appearance tab of the display properties dialog (right click the desktop and hit Properties), click Advanced and fool around in there. Window Background and Application Background seem like they might work. Also, if this is at your office, put in for one of those eyestrain reducing screen filters. Or invest in one yourself. You can also dial down the brightness on your monitor.

Thanks. I was asking something different but I just figured it out. Tools>Options>General then check "blue background, white text." It isn't the best but it better than looking at nothing but white.

Sounds like to me your monitor refresh rate is about 60hz. Increase it to 80hz and you will see a big difference.
