Apparently in XP pro (probably home too) you can set permissions and passwords for shared folders, but I have yet to figure out how. Could someone enlighten me, or, even better, point me to resource detailing windows sharing policies?

right click on the folder and goto the general tab. Under the attributes section hit the advanced button then the encyrpt contents box. Then you can set a password and the fie will be encrypted and secured by a password. Dont lose it though or you will be screwed.

I don't want to encrypt them, just restrict read/write acsess. I saw a friend do this write from the folder properties dialog on win 98.

This can be done almost the same way, in the folder properties box check off the read only box. This will prevent changing of the files in the folder.
