I'm gonna have to go with dale's 80GB WD. $57 vs $89 for much better price-performance ratio. 80GB is plenty, I run a 36GB and only use half of it.

Your weird, I use 75 gigs after a windows reinstall.

i have 2 of the drives that dale posted (not raid though) and they work well. i've got 50% of my windows drive filled and about 30% of my linux drive filled.

Hey Freeman.

If true SATA is what your looking for I think that Seagate is the
real deal. The WD 80Gb uses a PATA/SATA bridge and it is not a
true SATA drive. It is the 80Gb 8Mb Buffer drive with the SATA
interface and infact www.storagereview.com has the complete
story on the drives.

I wanted to make use of my boards SATA connector locations and
the slimmer cables and I was a little bummed to see that WD hasnt
implemented a true SATA interface-maybe thats where the Raptor
comes in. Both of WD 80Gb drives SATA & PATA perform about
the same.

What? The WD's are SATA150 and they plug in using standard SATA connectors...
I have no idea what the heck you are talking about. They do not plug into the IDE channels or anything like that. I don't know where you came up with this.

he means that in the hd itself there is a bridge that changes it from ide to sata just so it can use the smaller cable. this is the same as how alot of technology is first done. the first pci-x vid cards had bridge chips instead of pure pci-x and thats why they were so much more. he didnt mean tehre was a converter that u had to use..

Thanks Charbo, Dale doesnt read very well.

I can tell Dale you havent a clue. Did you read what I said.
I havent a clue what you are talking about in terms of IDE
connectors. I simply meant that my SATA connectors are
closer to my hard drives-8" versus about 23" or so for my
IDE and this is the only reason I was looking into the WD
SATA drives.

As to my comment regarding the similiarities between the
WD SATA and PATA drives, here is something to chew on.
The WD JB(pata) and WD JD(sata)............
