Lately i have been trying to install a gigabit ethernet connection from my pc to my parents pc (both using winxp). The distance between the two is about 25 meters.

I bought cat5 utp cable, wall plates, patch cables etc and connected the network up. Initially we just ran cables along the floor and everything worked fine.

Yesterday we wired the exact same cables through the walls and roof and the network still runs, but it only connects at 100.0Mbps instead of 1.0Gbps.

I have tried disconnecting and re-connecting but it stays at 100

I'm guessing we are picking up interference from something in the roof and the network is limiting itself to 100 to prevent excessive error. What can i do to fix this problem?? thanks

yes i do, it was working at 1gbps when the cables were on the floor.

Im not sure what that networking for dummys link is for.... the network is already installed through the walls and roof. It just wont run at full speed

It seems to me that you are suffering from EMI interference. This may be due in part to cabling running in the ceiling.(Maybe running over a flourescent lightiing fixture?)

I hope this helps.
