You can save money and buy an Athlon XP-M and overclock that thing to hell. Talk to Nubius on here, he's got one and I believe has it overclocked and optimized for games at 2.6Ghz(?).

That'll save you a boat on the processor and motherboard, of course you'll have to put a bit more cash in good memory to achieve a good overclock, and you'll have to stick to an AGP 6600GT, but it's well worth it in my opinion.

If your on a budget a mobile is much cheaper and should get you to around where a 3.6ghz Intel would be at.

That system posted you posted is pretty good as well.

If you get into PC's and gaming, your gonna have to have alot of money to keep your hobby that your name suggests... :sigh:

I'm such a cheapass as my little text thingy under my pic suggests this sytem will run battlefield 1942 and all the expansions at 800x600 res with all setting on high. Little choppy at these setting. thinkin about upgrading my cpu.
My rig is
1.8ghz p-4 I got mine for free
512 pc2700 ram $50
abit is7-e2 $60
80 gig hdd $58
eVGA 5600 ultra $130
aspire x-infinity $80
PSU $35
total cost roughly $420 bucks

note this is just a basis for what you could do
i think you should get
amd socket 939 3000+ $135
MSI "K8N Neo4-F" NVIDIA nForce4 $90
6600gt $175
hdd saw an add for a 160gig @ best buy for $40 after rebates
case whatever you like preferably antec so you dont have to buy a new psu $85
ram 1gig dual channel mushkin $100
im guessing your gonna scrap the other system and salvage the hdd and opticals

Total cost $625 this system could be downgraded somewhat i.e. cheaper mobo 512mb of ram which would lower your cost to about $550

go for 1 gig ram still (2x512) but don't get corsair value or kingston value; they suck (you can get other ram for around $100 that's better)

this cpu is outdated, but will still work

512 ram
pc 333
usually 1 gig is optimal, but 512 is fine; however, ddr333 doesn't give it as much bandwidth as ddr400 so it's not as good

What is the point of buying RAM that is faster than the bus of the CPU?
Waste of money. Your going to buy ddr400 ram that will run at ddr333.

lol I was running it at 2.5GHz for the longest time, but as of a few days ago yes I've been running it at 2.6GHz :D Can hit 2.7GHz 100% stable, buuuut it requires 1.975Vcore which I'm just not comfortable putting in for 24/7 use, although it probably still wouldn't get above 50C which would still be cooler than some people with less Vcore lol.

Well if his board can lock the AGP/PCI bus then he can just OC the CPU up to 400FSB
