Partitions

I myself have three partitions, and they all serve their purpose :

1) Windows XP (NTFS formatted) for wireless networking / gaming
2) Linux ext2 filesystem for programming / Operating System engineering
3) Go-Between for XP and Linux (FAT32)

Partitions vs Folders in organising files is almost the same. The real purpose of partitions is for back-ups (as Inaris mentioned). I format a lot, so I need partitions.

Is there any software that doesn't cost $70 that will allow me to partition a hard drive so I can install Linux without getting rid of XP?
