Awesome article. To quickly sum it up...multitasking environments of course go to Intel, but for raw power it goes to Opteron. In the end they basically give the Opteron a big thumbs up as it won most of the benchmarks, dominates the Intel in quite a few, and has a insanely significant lower power consumption and heat output than the Intel.

Considering it's 1GHz slower and 1mb lower in cache, the Opteron friggin rocks.

I think its kinda even, except in games hwere intel gets stomped on, but were not talki about gaming computers... and they actually say the xeon is a more reliable choice..
 
These are processors made for servers right?
Yes....althought it's interesting they were using a 6800Ultra for graphics and running Doom3 and Far cry based things lol.

Let us not forget this tidbit

With SSE-3 support added, the Opteron is now on par with the Xeon in terms of processor instruction compatibility. In addition, the lower power consumption and heat production levels were immediately noticeable to us, and really helped cinch the Opteron 252 as the better overall in our minds

So you are mistaken if you got that they said the Intel is 'more reliable'

AMD uses less power, less heat, dominates throughout mosts of the test and overall is the better. They give Intel the medal of multitasking like what's been agreed upon forever now.

Any server running more than 1 CPU is gona take power, who cares if its 700 W or 7000 W!?

Yeah dude they mean because the actual motherboards are rare on the market right now. They say the Xeon is reliable in the fact it's easier to find a board for it. But as far as performance goes, the Opteron is their choice.

who cares if its 700 W or 7000 W!?
Anyone who's using them for rackmount server spaces like they said in the article. A lot less heat makes them ideal for servers with a lot of boards in them. Less power consumption = Can use a smaller wattage PSU thus using up less energy which for energy conservationists is a good thing, will keep the power bill down.
 
any1 who can afford these babies im sure wouldnt mind about an exra $20 on their bill
