update

HI, yup i did have the right error details but on one of my intermittent dvd reads i managed to get my win 2000 cd at least do a bit of the install - though it has problems and cant find files on the disk anymore.

this has cured the add/remove problem.

Now microsoft office says it isnt installed and keeps bringing up a windows installer on startup - of course my dvd player isnt working agin now !! getting asked for an MSRedist disk now as well on startup!

got audio back with the drivers. but confused by what ethernet driver to install and what the pci slot problem is/what driver there is for this.

Also it isnt completly clear what is wrong with the dvd and where to put the drivers but will try to sort this tonight...

also windows 2000 takes a long time once the username and password entry box comes up before the timer goes out and i can see what i have entered in the password section.

any advise still appreciated...

Well, I'm glad you are making headway. That is good.
You can download all of the nic drivers from them and put them in a group of folders that are only 1 layer off. Then when you go to find the drivers, just go back and forth until you find the right one. I thought that the X20 used Intel nics, but I could be wrong. Also, have you tried using IBM's scanning program? it works pretty well from all the tests I've done with it.

Run checkdisk to speed up boot time. Your drive is probably all over the place, so that will help with geting it back in working order...

no problem insurmountable!!

modem is looking good now thanks for that. Would use the ibm updator - is this the scanning prog you mean? - but i cant install the cd for the cable which is on a different computer!

reinstalled the cd drivers but no joy as yet on the dvd rom in the docking station,

but am a bit confused....again! And wonder if it can work and quite how it allows me access - it boots the dvd from the early black screen and then boots up windows? Afraid this is laborious questions - maybe it can be better explained:

1. Copy dckidecd.exe into your root C:\ directory.
- just stright onto c: then? not like into the drivers folder

3. so i have the files : the only dos boot diskette is the win me one i have had to used as unable to use my dvd to make another (though i can use the other computer to do this- but then which of the 4 do i put the files on then!) Anyway i'll try putting them on there

4. Copy mscdex.exe file from DOS (or others) to the DOS boot diskette. Where does this file come from!

5.Add the following statements in the config.sys file in the DOS boot diskette:
device=cmd64xx.dck
device=cmdatpcd.sys /d:cmd_cd
- so i open config.sys (with what software?-ah notepad) and where do i write this! - menu or help or cd or no cd or quick...

6.Add the following statement in the autoexec.bat in the DOS boot diskette:
LH mscdex.exe /d:cmd_cd - where in the bat exe do i enter it?

sorry to be dumb but this is the last (ish) step in getting the laptop alive - i just want my dvd back!

wow, I guess I should have read more of that site... that is instructions for dos. Don't use that one...

the pci serial port is the last error on the device manager - that is the one where the laptop attatches to the docking station right?

no. it's different. The serial port is a seial port. The Dockingstation is conneted througha passthrough interface, meaning it's the ports on the system that do all the work. The dock is just a way for the computer to expand the ports it's can't contain...

there isnt all that much there in the way of this docking bay problem is there. I have tried completing the method for :

again but i am not sure i am doing it right or it is having any effect as that doesnt sem to be the problem area. I hope it doesnt matter that i have changed the driver for this now...

What is the pci serial port for (it has the error mark)- is this the real problem do you think?

also that one of the devices recognised is just other device - unkown device is odd surely?

gonna try posting on the hardware bit as it seems like this dvd thing isnt getting anywhere. thanks for all the help, any further ideas on how to get this sorted are much appreciated. seriously any ideas at all bar jumping on it, well maybe the odd kick might help...
