Hi there. This is Solufien, an' I'm the new guy 'round here. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a problem I have. For my 'Build a Computer' project at my Dip. ICT course, I have been instruced to build a computer worth up to NZ$4000 ('bout US$3000), and choose & buy the components necessary for said computer (naturally I decided to build a gaming computer). As one of the main forums for computers in the web, I was hoping that someone could tell me what components I would need, and possibly what are the best/valueable right now. Thanks.

can you tell us what parts u need. cos things like a monitor are expensive and so is a operating system well windows in anyhow.

look at these not sure of total price just a quick list

amd fx55
thermalright xp120 cooler
1gig of gskill pc4400 dual channel
dfi skt 939 sli motherboard
2 eVGA 6800GTs or ultras
2 or 3 36gig WD raptors
audigy 4 pro
big ass psu

wish i could afford to built it.

I would get the same as tipsie smilie, except I would get 2 6800GT's and just overclock them to ultra speeds. The rest can be used on the case, fans, cooling ect.

AMD 64 3500 939 Winchester
K8NXP-SLI MB
2x 6800 or 6600
2 x 1gb OCZ ddr 400 (dual channel)
Use maxtor 16mb cache harddrives (they fly)

The 16mb cache maxtor's are also unreliable.

unreliable in what way? I just got my hands on them yesterday for benchmarking, we were going to start selling them with the avid and liquid 6 bundles.
