I am going to be swapping some stuff in my comp for one that I'm building for my parents cause their current comp is really bad. They will be doing strictly office work, so they are getting my P4 2.8GHz and the mobo. Maybe the PSU if I can't get the stupid plugs loose. I dunno if they are wanting my RAM as well or not, but thus far it is just the cpu and mobo. In return, they will be getting me and AMD 64 :)D:cool: ) cpu and a mobo. There is a money limit, but I still need to find out. So here are my Q's:

1. What socket of AMD 64 cpu should I get?
2. What core of AMD 64 should I get?
3. What mobo should I get?
4. What vid card should I get for my parents? No gaming, just up-to-date office work.

Again, I still need to work out the details, so I'll keep you posted on what is going where. Thanks a bunch!

You will want a socket 939 CPU, unless money becomes an issue and socket 754 is the only practical option.

If overclocking is something you wish to achieve, you want a Winchester core. A 3000+/3200+/3500+ all perform about the same and overclock about the same, the 3200+ would be the best price performance ratio in my opinion though. If you do not wish to overclock, any of the CPUs above using a Newcastle core will be fine.

If you do not need PCI-E, I recommend the Abit AV8-3rd Eye. If you want PCI-E, I recommend the MSI Neo4 Platinum. If you want an SLI board, the DFI lan-party is what you are looking for.

Based on your what your parents need, you don't need anything special. You could pop in a GeForce 2 by all means and it would be sufficent. I think a Radeon 7000 would do nicely.

So I take it that the Winchester core runs cooler than the NewCastle. That is why I ask about which core. I want the cooler of the two. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-502&depa=1

With the mobo. I am not going to be using PCI-E, and the Abit you suggested is a bit out of range for money. I'd like to keep it under $100 if at all possible.

About the vid card. I was actually thinking of an nVidia 5200ish...

if you're going to get amd64 you've got to get 939 .. 754 is absolutely worthless.

Core: winchester
MB: K8ns-ultra
VId: geforce fx5200

fast and reliable

The video card is for your parents and not you correct?

If you're going to be gaming a 5200 will work, but i'd recommend a 5700 at least.

oh, and you can get 6600 128 gt agp for 149$ retail @ newegg
