When you do an upgrade your PC does not contain two Operating Systems, the old OS is over-written. If not, you would be prompted on boot to choose an OS.

The speed of your PC is not reliant upon your OS. If you were upgrading from 2000 to XP and your PC was slow at loading, it is more likely to be your system RAM that is causing the drop in speed. XP has higher requirements (obviously) than all previous Operating Systems. Also, if you have alot of other programs running aswell as XP, your resources will be used up quicker and in turn slow your PC more.
